Default Problem installing old games (non 16bit instaler games)

Helo All, will start with the stats!

PC stats

vista ultimate 64
AMD dual core 5000
4GB RAM
GForce 7950 GT Card (1)

I am trying to install TOCA Touring Car Championship on my machine. The game is from 1997.

I change the compatibility mode to 95 to get the installer to run. If I dont change it, i get the message 'cannot run on win32 and windows NT machines'.

When trying to install, it asks if I want to skip the installation of direct X 5.0. When i press Yes to skipping, i get the following error immediately:-

'There was an error whilst trying to install some files, Press okay to quit'.

I Press okay and the installer closes.

If i press no to skipping the installation of directX 5.0, it shows a window teling me that DX5 wil be installed and that if later versions already exist, it will not try to install 5.0. I press okay, and it immediately says that the directX installation failed, I press Ok, it then says 'there was an internal error'.

The most irritating part really is that it gives no error codes or any leads as to find out what is wrong. I am hoping here i may find a little help.

There is an XP machine in the house, here i also change its compatibility to 95, if not i get the same error as above. when trying to install it on there, I get exactly the same errors as above.

I have also tried to install it on virtual pc with 95 installed. the virtual PC uses an emulated graphics card called Trio s3 32/64 PCI. The game installs yet does not display properly. If there is a way to get hold of an 'update' for this emulated card (which i have failed to find so far!) then i would be happy to play the game on the virtual PC.

A classic game I really want to play, i realy hope you can help any more info needed ill be happy to tell, dying to play this old classic again!

Hey there.

I agree there is no way this will run.

It appears your Vista and XP machines hardware will not run in a 16 bit mode as in 95.

When I say hardware I mean your graphics card.

Vista and XP were not designed for Direct X 5 but a later version such as 9 and 10.Vista and XP will not let you downgrade to 5.

Direct X is associated with graphics cards.

You have a combination of a very old game trying to run on newer hardware and software machines,it is just not going to go.

It just boils down to incompatibility.

JB.

thanks, i had a feeling it was down to incompatability.

what about the virtual pc? the game actualy runs on virtual PC but it cannot display the menus properly. I am assuming the additions Trio S3 Emulated card is as upgraded as it can get? but if that was the case im assuming that an emulated graphics card can aso be updated. I have searched for the potential driver and found it but have not been able to actualy download it! (no download link hehe)

Im also assuming (hoping to be wrong!) that this emulated card (a 4mb card!) cant be 'upgraded' using drivers to a card with more memory. ill be looking into this too but so far ive seen that the virtual PC can not use your actual card which is why an emulated one was put there. I havent seen yet that it cant be 'upgraded'. My hopes are high though but i might have to admit defeat!

anything about teh virtual PC graphics card?

Many thanks for your help i knew id get help here hehe
