Operating System: Windows XP - Professional PC Experience: PC Illiterate | PC running XP Professional. My son plugged his iPod into a USB port. The iPod locked up and the PC started to run slowly. He claims he shut it down and now it won't start up. On startup it shows 'Boot from CDRom' or similar message but then hangs. If I try and re-install XP it goes through the whole process of loading the files, reboots as it should but then goes back to the same 'Boot from CDRom' state after the restart. I also notice then some corruption of characters on the screen. The PC is about 8 years old. Thanks for any help, Rgds |

| Hello Firmex Welcome to Free PC Help Ok so you have been into the bios to change the boot order to cdrom first, saved the setting, usually by pressing F10, inserted the XP install disk and you still get that message "boot from cdrom"? Would this be the case? |

| If you want to do a new install of XP then the cdrom should be the first boot device Firmex. Consider this picture here, you need to move the cdrom to the top of the list then save the settings on exit. http://www.fujitsu-siemens.co.uk/rl/...otPriority.jpg |

| When you changed the boot setup to cd and popped the XP disk in it will say, once it recognises boot files on the cd, "Press any key to boot from CD" When you install XP it reboots about 3 times, what microsoft forgets to tell people is not to press any key AFTER the initial request. DO NOT press any other key after that apart from entering the 25 digit/character key after that. What exactly does it say on that copy of XP that you have? |
