There will be an option in the bios to "Restore Defaults". Go ahead and do that, then try Standby. As a test, please see if the same thing occurs using Hibernation.

What is the make and model of the PC?

Did you install and drivers or updates just prior do this occurring?

Can you get into safe modde now...at startup keep tapping the f8 key, you will recieve some options choose safe mode. if you can boot into this try running a system restore to the day before this happened.....if this is a pc i wouldnt really have hibernation turned on,,,
let me us know if safe mode works
regards
danzil

Danzil,

The Hibernation suggestion was for testing purposes only.

i've restored the BIOS setting to default and tried standby but the same thing happens. i have also tried hibernate, that works fine.

however when i restored the BIOS setting to default, just before the windows splash screen, for about 2-3 seconds a black screen appears with a flashing cursor in the left hand corner(didn't used to happen before i restored the BIOS settings to default). Is that a problem or is it normal?

Also danzil i can get into windows so i'm not sure why i should go into safe mode?

I haven't installed any new drivers and i bought all my PC components and got someone to fix them together so it hasn't really got a make and model, however most of the boards are ASUS i.e the motherboard, graphics card etc.
