when playing cd from my pc cd drive the sound is distorted - sound from the web etc is fine. Help !

You should look in Device Manager to see if there are any problems noted with the drive. Whether or not you see any I suspect a physical problem with the drive. The easiest way to test this is to borrow or swap the drive and see what happens.

Right click My Computer. Select Properties. Select Device Manager. Look at your CD drive for any problems.

I assume the audio CD's work on other computers.

Just because an audio CD does not work in your computer but you can read data does not mean your drive is OK.

You should also test to see if retail audio CD's work or if it's just ones you make.

Device manager says its working ok - I've turned the cd player volume right down in device manager and this seems to make a difference but it's still not good. Any other ideas ?

steven I've never seen the option to adjust volume in Device Manager but that might just be me.

This could be a failing CD drive. Can you borrow one to test a different one?

What CD programs do you have installed as this might be a software issue?

What is the make/model/number of your PC?

What is the CD drive as listed in Device Manager?

Can you borrow one to test a different one?

It could be worthwhile having Windows reinstall the drivers.

Go back to device manager > right click on the DVD /CD drive and select uninstall.
Windows will detect new hardware on rebooting and reinstall the drivers.

You may also want to check that DMA mode is enabled.
Click the + next to IDE ATA/ATAPI
Right click the Primary IDE Channel(s) > Advanced
Check that "DMA if Available" is checked and not PIO.

Do the same for Secondary.

As Ken said try letting Windows reinstall the drivers.

You can also look to see if there are newer drivers at hp Support & Drivers.
