Default New computer

I have purchased a new computer - XP pro & office 2003. I was told that I could transfer most of the files from my old (also XP pro) to my new computer simply by connecting a cable between them.

I was ashamed of being green at this so I pretended I knew what they where talking about even when I didn't. Can any one explain this in real simple terms or point me in the right direction.

All I want is to transfer my files to my new computer - I guess I could burn them on a CD and move them over that way - but there must be simpler way.

T.I.A.

You can also buy a cable that does this for you, but in my eyes is an unnecessary cost - do what Wolfey posted as it is far better.
