Talking Laptop can't find internet on working network?

Hello everyone,

I'm not tooooo computer saavy so please bear with me. I just became the owner of a used Compaq Presario lappie, and when I hook it up to my linksys router, that my other pc is on, It just won't find any internet.

In device manager the NIC card appears to be working fine. I tried to "repair" the LAN that's set up, and it said it was working fine as well.
It's running WIN xp home SP1 (I'd like to update asap)

Ipconfig states: 192.168.1.105, 255.255.255.0, 192.168.1.1

Any suggestions? I looked for firewall and all that, but the "security" icon that's on my desktop is not shown on this lappie... so I have no idea where to look.

So sorry if this is jumbled, I'm a mac girl really XD
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Paper Moon

First of all can I ask why you have not updated to the latest Service Pack which is now SP3 on XP?

Hello Wolfeymole

Well I just got the laptop, and I thought you needed an internet connection to update? Am I wrong? When I try to do Win update, it just says "page cannot be found."

This laptop has no cds, only the Compaq restore Cd's that came with it. Sorry about the noob questions

Thanks for the help!

I'm assuming your using a Ethernet cable to connect as oppose to using wireless?

If you are not getting any errors messages it could be a few things.

Can you try to follow and post back the results please?

Click Start and then click Run.
In the box type cmd and hit the return key

You should see a black screen with some white writing...
If you can type the following and hit the return key:
Code:
ping www.google.com
Secondly try the following command:
Code:
ping 66.249.91.147
The results of this will help us locate your problem easier.

Thanks

Right ok,

A couple more suggestions;

Firstly, its a long shot but just to be 100% sure, since there was a previous owner of the laptop it could have been set up to use a proxy server for a business or home network. If so, this may cause some problems you are experiencing..

To check this out, if you could open Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, click Internet Options and then the Connections tab and finally click the LAN Settings button.

Under Proxy Server there should not be any information in the boxes and then ensure that the box is Unchecked.

Click OK to close the LAN Settings box, and then click OK to close the Internet Settings box and restart Internet Explorer.

Secondly, it might be something to do with your Router.. Could you tell us what Make and Model it is?

Thanks

Thanks Mike!

Under LAN setting in IE, the only thing checked off is "automatically detect settings"

The router I'm on is an older Linksys, model: BEFSR41

However my desktop pc (which I'm on right now... seems to be working fine, and is on the same thing.) I await your reply

Try restarting your computer in Safe Mode with Networking and see what happens.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode with Networking.

* If the computer is running, restart it.
* Start tapping the F8 key when the computer restarts. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again. If F8 doesn't work try F5.
* Use the arrow keys to ensure that the Safe Mode with Networking option is selected.
* Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode with Networking.

Hello Kelly,

I rebooted in Safe mode with networking, and it still will not bring up internet. It loads forever and shows a loooong url at the bottom that ends in dnserror.htm. It doesnt give me a page even, just a popup error that says IE could not open the search page.

I tried a different cord and a different port in my router, and it acts like there might be internet, ie: Norton comes up and asks me to update, and the .net passport wizard asks to be set up - but it still will not connect to windows update or any of these things, and still no internet. Thanks for all the help.. I'm totally stumped.

oh also: it will ping my router just fine.
