Thank you Seth, I did try the winsock fix, but it didn't work....I installed Firefox from a burned cd but that also will not connect. I can't install IE 7 on the laptop without SP2 or 3, and it refuses to run the updates, even from the cd I burned.

The router lights are confusing me... The laptop's port does not have all it's lights showing. On my router there are 3 lights for each computer, and the bottom orange one (marked 100) is not on for the laptop.

I have two greens and an orange for my desktop pc.. what does this mean? when the 100 light is not on?

Thanks for all the help

Are you 100% sure that you are an administrator on this laptop - not being able to install updates and service packs is a dead giveaway for you not being an administrator.

Dalo - I'm pretty sure, I'm logging into the only name available. I was getting MS-DOS errors when trying to install the updates from the cd I burned.

I'm still wondering about my router lights.. The laptop is missing the bottom light. and now I've noticed only the laptop can access the router, my desktop pc will not.. it just keeps saying connection reset.. have I messed something up?

Right - the problem with a router when not setup is:-
there is one ip address - and whichever pc/laptop is turned on first will occupy the ip address and the other will not be able to access the internet.

you need to go into the routers home page and there will be some settings for adding other pc/laptops to access the router and this is normally done by adding MAC addresses of the pc/laptops that will be using it.

I used to have a linksys router - for 1 day and I took it back and got a Netgear one, there are lots and lots of problems posted all over the net with Linksys routers, but some people cannot praise them enough.

I will have a look at the Linksys if you post the model number and tell you where if there are any places to add a pc/laptop.

If you plug both into seperate ethernet cables and connect to the router that way they should work. (seperate ethernet on the laptop and seperate on the pc and then plug one into port one and one into port 2 for eg)

hi again Wolfey

I know! But I swear that's what it said. I downloaded SP2 and 3 to a cd, tried to copy them from the cd to the lappie desktop and about 99 percent through they both said "Invalid MS-DOS function" in a pop up error. The same thing running it from the cd.

Now I copied over that winsock fix and Firefox just fine from a cd, so I don't know what went wrong. At this point I'm just ready to try to reformat the entire thing with a REAL windows disk, not that compaq restore stuff I have.

Edited because I didn't see Dalo's latest post!: I've been looking in there too Dalo, I just don't know enough about this router to know what I'm looking for. It is a linksys model BEFSR41. And I do believe I have them set up the way you specified. the cable modem is hooked into the "uplink" port - then I have my desktop pc ethernet cable to port 4 - and my lappie ethernet cable to port 3. They are separate cables. I hope that's what you mean.

sounds like whatever program you used to burn the CD's has done them as BOOT CD's and not DATA disks

Dalo- THANK YOU! It took me some time to understand it all but that really broke it down for me and was helpful. I followed the instructions to reset, and I reset the router and the cable modem to factory settings, once I did that, I rebooted my laptop and desktop and now they both work!!!! I feel bad that it seems like such a simple fix, but thank you ever so much!!! Thank you everyone that helped, this place is truly fantastic!
