Computer is Freezing - Computer Help & PC Help Forums

Hi, im new here and hope ive added this post in the correct section.

Ive recently came back from holiday and im now getting problems with my computer.

Whats happening is when im trying to run multiple programs im getting a strange click from the hard drive area and the certain program and sometimes the whole computer will freeze up. I took it to the local computer repair shop and they suggested i needed a new power supply. I got them to install the power supply which has helped the speed of my pc. However, the problem with freezing is still around and the clicking from what i believe is the hard drive is still happening.

Im wondering if anyone has any thoughts on whether it is my hard drive and if so what can i do about it?

Welcome to Free PC Help Jamie.

The clicking is a standard sound from a hard drive failing. I suggest you back up any personal data before proceeding further.

Once that's done, use a tube like one from a paper towel role to confirm that it is indeed the hard drive clicking.

So what does he do with the tube Seth?

Use it as a telescope and peer at the drive?

Pretend it's a Dead Sea Scroll that won't open?

Gaze at the moon through the roll perhaps?

We understand Seth but it would be nice if you would fully explain yourself mate.

I'm sure he knows...and after he checks, he can use it as a giant spitball tube aimed directly at you

The symptom you state is almost a sure shot sign that your hard drive is failing. However, to learn more about different types of hard drive failures and there symptoms, please read the following article:

OK, the first and foremost step you should take is to backup all your important data on external media like flash drives and CDs / DVDs. Make sure the data is retrievable when you need it.

Next, you will need to buy a replacement drive. This drive will serve as a replacement when your current hard drive eventually fails. You might not want to buy one at this time, but sooner or later, you will need to buy one so there is no point delaying the purchase.
