Default EXT USB HUB PUZZLE

I have purchased an 'Advent 4+1 port hub USB 2.00' from PC world. It works fine but when i come to shutdown the PC , one of the PC's CD drives light and the red processor ext light are left permanantly on, but the PC seems to be shutdown. Also a notification message from the task bar says 'Itwill run faster when connected to a USB 2.00 port' when i connect anything, but I know my PC has only USB 2.00 ports only. Can you help please.

Regards Ian.

If you plug the Hub into the ports at the front of the PC then they are probably USB1.1 the back ports on the motherboard are normally USB2.0 depending how old the Motherboard is.
If you have it plugged into the back ports and its still 1.1 then you have technology that is older than the HUB and therefore the hub will run at the reduced speed of 1.1 - is it a powered hub?

Yes it is a powered hub and also the hub is plugged into a new PCI 4 port 2.00 card.

USB 2.0 was released in April 2000 - so yours should be -
is it plugged in the front or back?
is it powered via mains?

It is plugged in the back and is powered from an adaptor from the mains.

Weird one with the hub - and as for the HDD activity light staying on it could be lots of things from the wires on the case that connect to the MOBO shorting out.
The PSU being on the blink or the MOBO dying -

No problem - if you take the hub out of the equation - as in the device straight into the back of the MOBO - do you get the same message -
If so then the ports on the MOBO do not support USB2.0 and if not then the HUB is 1.0

Angry Advent USB

I too purchased an advent usb hub from PC World and came up with the same message in the taskbar.
As it worked I thought no more about it as I have quite an old pc- until my son came home with his brand new laptop and tried it with the same results.
I took it back to PC World who tested it- yes you guessed it- with the SAME message appearing but I was fobbed off with '...unless you have the hi-speed usb installed it will only work at the lower speed'
not being very up on computers I couldnt argue but when I told my son- who is a computer engineer- he said rubbish it should work at 2 speed not 1.
So it looks like we have paid out for a 2 and been fobbed off with a 1.

It will only run at USB2.0 if the Motherboard supports it - 99% of devices are able to run at USB 1.0 and 2.0 to make the devices more compatible
so if your motherboard only supports USB 1.0 it will only run at that speed
