Hi,
I have a 320GB Maxtor ext hardrive with mostly music on it.
When I view properties of said drive, it reads 21GB free.
However, when i view the contents of the drive, and click each item to view individual properties, it only totals around 155GB - so, what's taking up the rest of the space? I should have approx 140GB remaining.
One thing I did previously was back up my laptop weekly. However, I removed all the back-ups recently as it was filling up the hard drive too much.
Do these back-up files still exist somewhere?
The drive's recycle bin is empty - I've checked.
I have Hidden files set to be displayed.
Many thanks,

I was thinking of replacing the internal hard drive on my Packard Bell Easy Note L4012. I have done some research so far into replacing my hard drive but I just want to confirm exactly what kind of hard drive I should upgrade to.

My laptop I believe is 5 years old and after looking under System Information the name of the hard drive came up under Name as *Intel 82801FB/FBM Ultra ATA Storage Controllers -266FF*. I've been having trouble distinguishing between whether it is either a PATA or SATA type of drive but I believe it is a PATA drive. Also I was wondering about the physical size of the hard drive. I believe the physical size should be around 2.5 inches rather than 3.5 that is meant for desktop computers.

So my main questions are is this right? Should I upgrade to a PATA hard drive? If so is the size of 2.5 inches correct? Should there be any other factors to consider before I buy a new hard drive?

Hi hoping somebody can help me. Bit of a novice so please bare with me.

Had a WD2500KS with Windows XP Media Centre, Motherboard Asus A8N32-SLI.

Recently seemed to contract a fairly nasty virus with AVG got rid of, but then it failed to boot - it would crash when it got to the Windows XP loading screen.

I picked up another hard drive, a Samsung HD502HJ which a friend had going spare, formatted and did a clean install and its working fine.

However, If I connect the old WD drive to try and recover some of the data off the drive (Photos, music etc), Windows fails to load. Disconnect it and it works fine again.

Is there something I'm doing wrong, or is their a conflict between the drives? Any help would be greatfully recieved. :)

Image: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qNFgsHp2dCk/Sr1HU-iIp-I/AAAAAAAACZc/eop9jK3goBo/s400/15.jpg (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qNFgsHp2dCk/Sr1HU-iIp-I/AAAAAAAACZc/eop9jK3goBo/s1600-h/15.jpg)

On computer without CD/DVD drive (e.g. Aspire One)
you must change the first boot order to USB Flash drive from BIOS. How to do this?

*Change Boot order from BIOS:*

*Step 1:*
Plug a Flash drive into a USB port on your computer/laptop

Image: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qNFgsHp2dCk/Sr2KPi6mSiI/AAAAAAAACZ0/3L2m-n_KdcY/s400/flash_drive_plugged.jpg (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qNFgsHp2dCk/Sr2KPi6mSiI/AAAAAAAACZ0/3L2m-n_KdcY/s1600-h/flash_drive_plugged.jpg)

*Step 2*:
Turn on your laptop then hit *F2* rapidly (or *Del *for some other machine)
then go to *Boot* tab > change boot order > then hit *F10* key to *Save and Exit*

Image: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qNFgsHp2dCk/Sr2NogJq5MI/AAAAAAAACZ8/vasQxrb06Zw/s400/BIOS_change_boot_order.jpg (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qNFgsHp2dCk/Sr2NogJq5MI/AAAAAAAACZ8/vasQxrb06Zw/s1600-h/BIOS_change_boot_order.jpg)

Now you can boot from USB Flash drive, first select1st, text mode setup (Boot from flash again after finished)

then... on the first restart, select2nd, GUI mode setup, continue setup + 1st start of Windows

*Install Windows* (http://komku.blogspot.com/2009/10/how-to-install-windows-xp-part-1-step.html) XP as usual...

Image: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qNFgsHp2dCk/Sr2PtmcxexI/AAAAAAAACaE/VfXOLY6CNKQ/s400/boot_screen.jpg (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qNFgsHp2dCk/Sr2PtmcxexI/AAAAAAAACaE/VfXOLY6CNKQ/s1600-h/boot_screen.jpg)

Using a USB pen drive to install windows will take more time than using the original install disk.

This software is excellent and I used it yesterday to install on my babies Acer Aspire netbook with no issues at all.

On computer without CD/DVD drive (e.g. Aspire One)
you must change the first boot order to USB Flash drive from BIOS. How to do this?

Change Boot order from BIOS:

Step 1:
Plug a Flash drive into a USB port on your computer/laptop

Step 2:
Turn on your laptop then hit F2 rapidly (or Del for some other machine)
then go to Boot tab > change boot order > then hit F10 key to Save and Exit

Now you can boot from USB Flash drive, first select
1st, text mode setup (Boot from flash again after finished)

then... on the first restart, select
2nd, GUI mode setup, continue setup + 1st start of Windows

Using a USB pen drive to install windows will take more time than using the original install disk.

This software is excellent and I used it yesterday to install on my babies Acer Aspire netbook with no issues at all.

ok i admit, Ive been careless and entered the hdd the wrong way round on my shiny new NAS, did someone say read the stupid manual??!!!, Ive carefully opened the back of the drive to remove the stuck drive , and when reassembled the drive refused to turn back on, realise ive made quite a big error of judgement opening this whilst under warranty , but wasnt thinking straight at the time, my question would be has this drive got even more in common with a toaster than looks alone or is there a chance it can be repaired? i thought i may have blown a fuse, however, ive changed the powercable, the powerpack is lit up, what else could the problem be? please help me out, thanks

USB Drive keeps asking to be formatted

Okay so i've recently bought a Kingston Data traveller 150 64GB. Unfortunately I decided i wanted to split it into 2 partitions of NTFS and FAT32 and so used O&O Partition Manager to format the driver and delete the partition.

Ever since then everytime I insert the pen drive into my PC it tells me it needs to be formatted as it shows up in Disk Management as a RAW drive.

I have used testdisk which allows me to write over the MBR and fix the boot sector, it then instructs me to restart my pc and the USB stick then works fine. However it won't allow me to safely remove the drive and if I restart my PC the stick again comes up that it needs reformatting.

Can anyone help me come up with a permanent solution?
