Its the first time ive started to re-vamp my rig, and ive been on the prowl for a new graphics card contemplating loads of them.

Im at the point now where im sorta lost as to which one is right for what i want. I've got around the £150 mark (about $230) to splash out on one. I want it for gaming FF14 hopefully. And i want a nice framerate with it.

Ok so im asking for quite a bit. But ive several questions i want answering, so i dont disapoint myself or waste my money!

Ive got a 750W PSU didnt pay allot for it which worries me a tad, but if it struggles i will be prepared to buy another. And got a PCI-E slot as far as i know.

Now for my questions:

- Do i get ATI, Nvidia or neither?

- Whats the difference between all of them? (ive been going by the MB/GB's but have been told thats not always the case)

- Where should i buy one from? (i found Amazon fairly handy with a good range of them)

- Why do some look totally different, and yet have the same spec and are of the same series? o.o

A total novice as you can probably see, so any advice from you more experienced people out there is much welcome. Ty

Also I had a Nvidia Geforce 8600GT(p402 8600GT 256MB), which broke out of warrenty, got a new one from dell which broke 5-6 months down the line again! ''oh sorry sir only 3 months warrenty on that, you will need to buy a new one'' wtf? ''... um i dont think so''.

- Anywhere i can get it repaired?

Hi all,

New to the forum and wondering if anyone could be able to kindly assist me.

I have an Athlon AMD AM2 quad core desktop with an onboard Nvidia GF8200E graphics card and a 450w PSU. I have purchased a second hand ATI radeon 3870 HD graphics card to upgrade to which I have slotted in to the the PCI-e slot. The card appears to power up and the fan spins however I have "no signal" from the monitor. The card came with no disk however I have downloaded the drivers. I have checked obvious stuff like making sure the DVI cable is plugged in properly etc.

Can anyone please explain to me where I am going so terribly wrong!

Kind regards and thanks!

ATI 5870 - Can my system support it?

Hello all,

I have the following system:

Dell Alienware Aurora.
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 950 @ 3.07GHz
1TB SERIAL ATA NON RAID (7200 RPM)
12GB 1333MHZ (6X2GB) Tri Channel DDR3 RAM
24X DVD+/-RW DRIVE
NVIDIA GeForce GTS 240
2 x USB Ports
3 Fans (I Think)

Basically I want to upgrade my graphics card to a 'ATI 5870' however after doing some research my main concern is my PSU. I believe my current PSU is 550W. I tried checking for definate however could not find the sticker inside my system.

Based on above, any views or suggestions would be very much appreciated as to whether or not my system will be fine with the addition of the graphics card.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! :-)

Gefore 9800 k-nackered! (i think?)

Hi, ok so to get off on the right foot, i know bits but not much, and certainly not to any depth.
Right: moved house the other day, desktop all nicely transported, turned on, on the phone to the net people and during a random game of solitaire the screen goes haywire!
I am not sure exactly how to explain it, but imagine (pix on their way shortly) a dupliicate of everything on the screen both to the right and to the left of the original and about one 3rd the width of the screen away from the original. Take this image and put a weave effect over the entire screen...i've lost you haven't I...

When the PC was running in normal mode, and the issue first occured, everything froze.
Rebooting into safemode allowed me to move the cursor around and pretty much use the PC like normal...only now there are extra effects!

If (when in safemode) i move the cursor (remeber there is a duplicate cursor too both to the right and to the left) it wipes out all of the weave effect that it goes over leaving the screen looking normal again, kind of like an eraser, however, if i move far enough left or right (not up or down as the duplicates are to the left and right of the original) the duplicate will re establish little lines (weave effect) where they had previously been erased.
Not sure if this will add to the puzzle but whilst the PC is booting it displays some of the same weave effect, none of the duplication though (that i can make out).

I am assuming that this is a graphics card issue (there are two Geforce 9800's installed - SLI is disabled as it screws with my gaming).

Any and all help much appreciated, thanks people.

Paul

Hello All,

Glad to say that I am new to the website and forum....

I think the title of my problem say's it all, I have a Sony Vaio PCVD-15XD6/W which I have been using with an old P4 pc in my garage, you know for man stuff.

The problem started with the old pc when the chipset died so I bought a new motherboard and E6500 CPU however this comes with PCI-E slot and no AGP.

Old graphics card redundant.

I bought a adapter (VGA to DVI) to work of the motherboard VGA out but the screen just says "no input", the screen is working fine on my other pc graphics card (HD 5750).

I am missing something or do I need to fork out for graphics card?

Thanks

Hi
I bought a graphics card from Ebay about 2 months ago Ge-Force 7600GT , I got a new monitor way back in April a 16Inch DGM anyway when I tried to put the driver I was given for the graphics card It didn't go to the desktop, I had to uninstall it and left the screen as it was lines appeared than a day or 2 later the lines disappeared by itself...Went on the Nvidia website put the driver on for the graphics card, it was fine for a while than the lines appeared and the monitor went off where the red light flashes (means when I turn the PC off the red light flashes) after a while I uninstalled the driver from Safe Mode as it wouldn't let me on Desktop at all when I switched PC on waiting for it to finish Loading Xp u no that bar that goes up an down whilst waitin 2 go 2 the desktop ...I put the driver on again it worked ok than the lines appeared, went to safe mode than it seemed 2 b ok goin 2 desktop than it did it again (lines across the screen an monitor flashes red) I have since put a new driver on it and it was runnin fine all week til tonight (yesterday) the lines across the screen appeared and the monitor was flashin red I reset my PC a couple of times and I tried to go to the desktop but it just wouldn't..I uninstalled the driver and kept downloading new drivers but it wouldn't go to the desktop...So what do you think the problem is and how can it be resolved without lines appearing every so often without making the monitor flashing red?? I am getting fed up with this because my graphics card should be doin it's job not doin that every so often because it's weird an it's increasingly annoying..It sorts itself out for a while than goes back to lines on the screen then monitor just flashin red..There is nothing wrong with the monitor because it's a new monitor and I got it off Scan.co.uk , It jus seems really weird about wot's goin on wit my graphics card....I really don't know what it's trying to do and what's wrong with it it shouldn't be doing this near enough all the time, can any1 help me with this issue???

Additional Details
I have got thick lines across my screen where you can't hardly see the writing...As you can tell I'm using Windows XP Professional I have got Service Pack 2 on it and this is the main information about my PC:-

AMD Athlon (tm) 64 Processor 3200+
2.20GHz , 1.50GB of Ram
Foxconn 754 Socket -Motherboard it's Winfast as well

Some elements of XP rendering darker than normal on my second monitor

I recently bought a second monitor for my system. They both ran fine until recently the original started bugging out on me. Now at first i thought it could have been a contrast/brightness problem, but upon adjusting them on the monitor and the PC it made no difference. I then realized that the cursor was rendering at full brightness. On happening to play a video across both monitors, BOTH displayed the image at full brightness, whilst other elements on the affected monitor remained dark. So, i assumed it was a problem with the driver for the GPU.

I then switched the monitors over and restarted. this time, the effect was transferred to the new monitor. so i have to assume it's a problem with the DVI port.

I got the same effect when i tried another monitor on the DVI. This is really ****ing me off now, as it's completely removed any point of owning that second monitor unless i can fix it.

A final note; On startup, the login screen appears fine. Both monitors work perfectly. But a few seconds after login, the screen darkens. So, i suspect it may be a driver/software based problem, rather than hardware itself.

GPU Usage @ 100% causing freezing?

Hello. I'm having trouble with my new Nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX+.

Everything is in place and my computer is used for gaming. Specs are:

Windows XP 32-Bit
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E6550 @ 2.33ghz
3328MB Ram
650w Power Supply
P5K Motherboard
Intel Chipset P35/G33/G31

The Problem:
I can run internet/movies and all just fine. But when I start up a game, after just a few minutes it will lock up and freeze, the screen will eventually blink once and I can bring up the task manager without a hitch and close the program down.

Now I've ruled out overheating, the GPU/Core temp listed in MSI Afterburner never goes above 40-50 degrees for each. Additiontally, I've put the card into my friends computer, his specs are:

windows 7 32-bit
Intel Core 2 cpu 6600@ 2.4GHz
2GB Ram
750w Power Supply
And some crazy high-end motherboard.

And it worked fine, running the same games, so that rules out the card itself.
Also, I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers (using driver sweeper in safe mode etc)
Now the one thing I've noticed is this:

Image: http://i36.tinypic.com/f0cf2w.jpg

Now, the GPU usage was averaging around 30-40% during a game I was playing in which it didnt freeze for quite some time, I minimized (you can see the usage drop to 0%) just to speak to someone, then tabbed back in, and you can see the thing spikes to 100%, causing the game to freeze. What would be causing this? I imagine the GPU usage being at 100% causes it to freeze like that?

Also if I leave the screen frozen it'll eventually unlock, but the images will be very distorted and such.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Upgrading my Graphics Card

Hi, I'm using an Asus G1S gaming notebook and want to upgrade its graphics card. i know it'll be hard, but my warranty is already expired and it will be a nice challenge for a beginner like me.

My question is, how do i know what video cards are compatible with my notebook? It would really suck if i dismantled the whole thing and installed the new card only to have it not work or explode in my face :D

Also just to double check is it theoretically possible to upgrade the card? Do i just have to peel back all the layers to finally get to it or is it actually irreversibly connected to my motherboard?

Also, any recommendations on what card to buy?

theses are my specs.
You might notice i've upgraded the Hard Drive added 2 extra Gb of ram to make total 4Gb and changed from Vista Ultimate 32 bit to 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Just to avoid any confusion!
Give me a holler if you need to know anything else.
For a more complete list of my specs i found them on this site. They're pretty detailed!
Newegg.com - ASUS G Series G1S-A1 NoteBook Intel Core 2 Duo T7500(2.20GHz) 15.4" Wide SXGA+ 2GB Memory DDR2 667 160GB HDD 5400rpm DVD Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220182)

Operating System Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
CPU Type Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 2.2GHz
                Screen 15.4" WSXGA+
Memory Size 4GB DDR2
Hard Disk 500Gb WD Scorpio Black 7200RPM
Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT
Video Memory 256MB GDDR3 VRAM, TurboCache up to 512MB

Thanks so much for your help!!!
