Slow Laptop....Do I need more RAM?

Hi all,

I have a HP Pavillion dv9000 laptop with the following specs:

Windows Vista Home Premium SP1
AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-58
1.0GB RAM
Nvidia Geforce 8400M GS.

I've bought the laptop brand new in December 2007, and have maintained it well. Never had any problems or overloaded it...only had a few games installed and thats it.

However, over the last 12 months or so, it's been EXTREMELY slow on startup, sometimes taking 6 or 7 mins to startup from when I press the power button. I thought it might have been the startup programs, so cleaned them up, and also uninstalled all of my games and any software that takes up a lot of space on the HDD. I've also defragmented a lot. None of this has made a difference.

The thing I don't understand is why it suddenly got slower and it hasn't done it before?

Is this a RAM issue, i.e. do I need to upgrade to 2gb? Would it make much difference and solve my problem? I would like to go higher but I believe it can only take a max. of 2gb.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Will.

My PC Moves Very Slow

Well, I was usually turning on my PC when I saw that it was a bit laggy. I thought it was because of startup programs so I ignored it and entered in a game (Warcraft III), when I saw that I have huge un-playable lags.
I thought then that it was just a virus or something so I scanned with Avast but it found nothing. Then, i've CCleaned it and verified the startup programs and such, but still nothing. I've scanned again with Avast and then with Norton and BitDefender and other softwares (malwarebytes I think) and others but the lag didn't stop.
Then I checked the Task Manager and I saw the the CPU Usage was going to 100% when I was opening a folder or right-clicking desktop. I've reinstalled my windows and without installing anything (not drivers not anything) I checked again the CPU Usage and it was the same. I've checked the Processes but none were taking much usage. I've tried to run in Safe Mode, it was running a bit faster but still same CPU Usage.
I've cleaned the dust within a few weeks ago so I doubd this would be the problem, and as far as I see it's not overheating.

My Laptop Specs.:
OS: Windows Vista Home Basic SP 2;
Memory (RAM): 1 GB
System Tipe: 32-Operating System
Processor: Genuine Intel(R) CPU 575 @ 2.00GHz

Someone can help?

Computer making revving noise, will not start up

I have a Gateway with Windows Vista. I bought it roughly 2 years ago. It had been running normally as far as I know. Last weekend, it started to make a revving up (vroom) noise whenever I turned it on. The blue light around the power button would flash as well when it made this noise, and sometimes the light would just go off all together.

Once it was up and running, any slight movement I made with the mouse would cause it to make that same revving sound again. I was still able to operate everything pretty normally, it was just that this sound was starting to get somewhat irritating.

A few days after this, the computer wouldn't start at all. I would turn it on, hear the same sound as I did before. The monitor would show the Gateway logo for a second, leading me to believe the computer was starting, but a second later, I got the "No Signal" message with the red, blue and green bars.

So that is where I stand as of now. I cannot even start it up at this point, and being a photographer, I upload all of my pictures onto that computer. I'm really upset at the fact that I might lose years worth of photos. I'm not sure what is causing this, which is why I'm here. My main concern is saving my pictures. I have since bought a new PC, an HP Pavilion Slimline, suggested by a friend who is more knowledgeable than myself. But if there is any way possible, I need to get a number of files from the Gateway and somehow get them on the new HP.

Any ideas on what could be wrong? Thank you in advance.

Setting Vista to factory settings.

Hello,

I have a Zoostorm PC which I've had for about 2-3 years now and in the past month or so, I've had a Malware (Can't remember the name) and 2 Spyware (Security Suite) on my PC. The Malware and the 1st Spyware have been removed though I'm having difficult getting rid of this second one, currently I'm using my dad's laptop to post this thread.

I've been thinking of restoring my PC to Factory Standards like when I first brought it, though I wasn't given a disk and since then I have installed a new graphics card. When I had the installed, Vista automatically installed the drivers that it needed to run properly. I'm aware of the process of restoring to how it was when brought and I don't mind losing the current data I have. I can easily re-install my games on it and I don't have any important documents etc I need.

My PC make is a Zoostorm as it says on the PC Case and when I turn it on, Foxconn comes up, so that's what it is. To get to the Advanced Options, I need to tap F8 a few times to get to them. While I've been trying to find a detailed answer, the answers I've found so far have told me to select the Command Prompt and type "restore" and then type "y".

I know this my sound easy but I'm still worried that this may removed Vista itself from my HDD as well as will I need to re-install my old graphics card or not, as the options given don't really explain alot of the process.

I'd be grateful if someone can answer my question in detail and quickly as possible, as I have little experience with this process as I've not been working with computers for long.

Help!
I have looked all over this site, and nothing seems to help my situation.
I have an Acer Aspire desktop, model M1640 which will not boot up past the microsoft icon with the bar under it. I have tried launching in safe mode, did nothing. I tried launching using "the last known successfull configuration" Also, nothing. I did get a blue screen once which said Windows has encountered a problem and shutdown to prevent damage to your computer.
It also displayed the following message:
BAD_POOL_HEADER.....also a long message that says:
                    0X00000019 (0X00000070,0X8121EA08,0X8121EA18,0X08020005)

Sticker says Motherboard type MCP73 . This is all the info I can think of. I was planning maybe next to try using a bootable disk to access recovery mode in Windows. I sure hope someone can help! Thanks....

Hard drive partition issues - disk manager? yeah right....

hello people,

At the moment im having troubles with my hard drive partitions, ideally I want to get rid of it, but after a quick search on the net it seems like a long winded process - I found out that vista have its own disk manager so I thought I would settle for shrinking my partition (I need space for my C drive..... so I can install more games :D ) , but it states that access is denied - I again searched this on the net and found that the most obvious problem is with vista's programme itself, thus I thought that I will reformat my non-OS partition and then shrinking would probably work (as someone in a different forum suggested), but alas I go to format the partition and it says that a programme is using it and that formatting it could create problems, but I have no idea what programme could be using anything on my data D drive, I deleted nearly everything on there, there are obviously no programme files in there, so im stumped.

Its probably likely that I have made a rookie error along the way, and I am a little bit of a n00b so any help is appricated,

thanks, scott

Hi Guys,

I have been using vista for near about 2 years...and was doing pretty well till last month. Last month I was watching the online television news all of sudden the PC hanged making some wired noise and was shutdown...

When is did the PC restart it asked me to start normally or not...i did the select for normal start of Vista...it worked... I was happy that my PC is ok :)....all of sudden PC got shutdown after sometime....there after I have been trying to solve the issue...still issue remains the same...

As per different forums I have seen options as below:

1. Some says..System heat up problem...i have already cleaned fan and all at my best.
2. Some says..Virus problem... did complete new boot up of system with original factory condition but result remained the same... work for a while then again shutdown...
3. Some says..Software problem... I have done boot with minimum software...still problem continues.

I am tired of experimenting:(....Event logs also don't say much in information....

Now the problem has reached the level where fresh installation at all is not happening and it gets shutdown in mid....not sure where it will end up....

I am quite sure some of you guys have encountered such issue some or the other time... please help me in case anyone has had the issue in past.... every help will be welcoming...

Thanks

Hi there. I'm a total novice and just disconnected my computer as had to move to another room. I've made a note of everything and its reconnected just fine. The screen is showing a light and when I plug into the back of the hub its also flashing with a green light. I'm not sure what else to do but when I try to power button on the front of the unit absolutely no response at all?

Does anyone know of a secret switch I'm missing, process, etc???

Need desperate help as have like 3 proposals to finish today :)

Windows Update Problems

My Acer Aspire T180. Running windows Vista Home Premium

Spec:

AMD Athlon 64 x 2 Dual Core Processor 4200+, 2200MHZ, 2 Cores, 2 Logical Processors.
Installed Physical Memory 1 GB
Total Physical Memory 767 MB
Available Physical Memory 229 MB

Total Virtual Memory 1.76 GB
Available Virtual Memory 677 mb

I recently restored factory settings as my system was running slower and slower. It appears now that Windows Update is having problems installing the updates, specifically SP1 and SP2. I have followed the recommended fixes from Windows Help. Mr Fix It and Windows download tool, but I am still getting problems with failed downloads. Unable to download SP1 and SP2. Have tried SP1 manual download but this did not work.
Have noticed Microsoft stop supporting Vista system without SP1 & 2.
Each time I turn the computer off their are updates waiting to be installed, which I do, and when turning the computer back on these continue to update / install.
Error codes for the failed installations are: 80073712, 8000FFFF, 80242006 & 80246001. I have followed the instructions to resolve these errors but appear to be gong round in circles. Any help would be most appreciated.

Wireless Problem - Cannot Communicate with DNS Server

Hi,

I'm trying to give my friend access to our Wireless service. Whenever I've done this on any other laptop before, it's been really easy and automatically finds the router (http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/forums/index.cfm?action=showthread&threadid=385443&forumid=1#).

My friends laptop finds the router and when looking at the status it seems to be talking to the router, but does not connect to the internet.

The message returned is 'Cannot Communicate with Primary DNS Server(192.168.2.1)'.

I've tried lots of different things, looked at all the settings, re-started the router and still get this message. There is never any problem with the other 3 laptops we use at home.

Can anyone help ? Operating System is Widows Vista. It's driving me nuts!!!!

Many thanks,

peeboy :o)
