I am running Windows XP home and have Outlook Express 6.

Is there any way possible to use OE to access my free msn.com account or has that been gone for a long time now? I think I read that it did a long time ago but wondered if anything changed.

My main e-mail account has been a free msn.com account. I really like using OE as my talking speech software hates all the advertising on msn. I suppose the free account depends on the advertising on msn to be able to provide the free account? Just my guess but wondered if there is any way around it?


I have a secondary email that my ISP provided and have used with OE but I prefer my msn.com account. It just seems to be a waste of OE on an email I just don't use.

After some digging on google, it looks like this feature has recently been added to Microsoft's email service, windows live mail.

MSN mail and hotmail have both been combined into windows Live mail, so they are basically all the same email service now. This means that you can login to windows live mail using your MSN account.

I followed all the steps last night with no success.

Here are the error messages:

Who is your ISP?

The first error is a connection issue.Possibly your ISP server.

Please check your outlook settings under tools first.

'pop.msn.com' should not be there; the address you need is 'pop3.live.com'

Please check your account settings, and make sure you have 'pop3.live.com' as the address for incoming mail, and 'smtp.live.com' for outgoing mail.

BINGO, it worked!
After re-doing it again and making sure I had everything set up properly, I noticed a bunch of different "weird" unused accounts in account settings.
I removed unused ones and only kept the pop3.live.com one, set it as default. I went to tools- clicked SEND and RECEIVE ALL and it worked! I tested sending and receiving e-mails to another account with no problem.

Thank you so much for everyone's help.

Now if I can only figure out how to import my addresses and folders from my msn (rather my live.com) account to OE???

Export Contacts and Email Addresses from Windows Live Hotmail


To save your Windows Live Hotmail address book to a CSV file:

• Select Options | More options... (or just Options in the Windows Live Hotmail toolbar.
• Follow the Export contacts link under Customize your contacts.
• Click Export contacts.

You can now import contacts from the "WLMContacts.csv" file into the target application or service. Import Contacts and Email Addresses from Hotmail into Outlook Express


To import contacts and email addresses from Hotmail into your Outlook Express address book:

• Set up access to your Hotmail account in Outlook Express.
  • If you already have contacts in your Outlook Express address book for the current identity and want to make sure you are only importing Hotmail contacts, create a new Outlook Express identity for the Hotmail account.
• Select Tools | Address Book... from the menu in Outlook Express.
• Choose Tools | Synchronize Now from the address book's menu.
  • If this choice is not available, make sure you do not Close and restart Outlook Express if you have made any changes to the contact sharing settings.
• To import the contacts to an email program other than Outlook Express, export the current identity's address book and use your email client's import feature to add the contacts from the .csv file.

Or try this:

First off, on your office PC start up Microsoft Outlook Express and choose File --> Export --> Address Book. Now choose "Text File" from the choices:
The system will ask for a file name: click on "Browse" and make sure you know what folder your export is going to be put, then name it something simple like contacts and let Outlook Express add the appropriate filename suffix.
Now you can choose which fields you want to export: I suggest you select them all:
Click "Finish" and a second or two later, you'll be notified that the export is finished and you can quit Outlook Express.
Launch your favorite Web browser and log in to your Hotmail account, then click on the "Contacts" tab. On the left side you'll see a bunch of choices:
From this set of choices, select "Import Contacts", then select "Outlook Express" from the two options shown. Now you'll need to select the CSV file you just created in Outlook Express:
Here's where it's smart to have taken a few seconds earlier to see what folder Outlook Express was going to save the export. I not infrequently find that I've saved a file from a program in Windows just to have no idea where it's located on my file system!
Select the file, click "Finish", and, if all goes well, you'll see:

I've tried both ways with no luck.
It's easy to import other address books into msn/hotmail account but just can't export.
When I go to my live page, it never looks like your example #2. I can access in Options- more options-export contacts. I do get the wls file to save but can never find it again??

When I am in OE and click on import, I can NEVER FIND the files I have saved! I've been spending hours on this and am frustrated to where I may just print out the xls address and manually import the important addresses. (Lame I know)

After you have successfully completed the visual Capatcha it should ask you if you want to save the file. It should be a file called

WLMContacts.csv

You say it is an XLS (.xls) file? If this is the case then when you try to import it, it won't show up in OE's file browser, because OE will only accept files with the CSV (.csv) extension.

If you get an XLS file from windows Live mail, then try changing the extension to .csv and then importing it.

I tried doing that and it seemed as if I changed the file name to wlscontact.csv .
But when I go to OE-Tools-Address-import, I never can find the file name in my documents, my desktop or any other place I saved it.

I do feel silly as it seems to be an easy process. Funny thing is if I try to import an address book from a yahoo account to msn/hotmail account it is simple.

I do understand that OE can only import a .csv file. Now if I can properly change the file to a .csv file, save it properly and THEN actually find it, I may be in business. But until then I will have to add an address as I get mail from then.

Sorry for rambling but I'm just frustrated a bit.

No problem at all,

On reading your reply I realise that I have overlooked Windows XP's handling of file extensions.

If you open up my computer, then click on Tools at the top, then go to Folder Options, and then go to the View tab, you should be able to find the option 'Hide extensions for known file types'.

Make sure this is unchecked, and then click apply, and then OK.

Try to re-name the file now. You should be able to see the extension at the end this time.
