Default Dell Studio 19 CD/DVD wont work or eject

My wife's newi'sh computer has the problem above. Using the onboard diagnostics it found a fault, error code 2000 0147 Spindle test failed.

This has not functioned properly for the past 6 months but she used a workaround of a shortcut on the desktop. Well that gave up the ghost yesterday and now it's out of warranty.

My question is how can I fit a replacement drive?
Has anyone had the back off one of these?
How do they come off?
cheers
jim

Ok I've managed to get the drive out - plastic cards were very helpful in getting the back cover off which is a snap fit. One might be forgiven thinking it might break....

The drive is
Optiarc DVD+-RW AD-7640S SCSI CdRom Device
Any one that has had to google this problem will very familiar with those distinguishing letters.

No where does it advocate an alternative drive and the above model seems to be in short supply. Perhaps they have been withdrawn? Well they seem to be so faulty .....

Any ideas for an alternative 'slimfit' dvd/cd+-drive?
cheers

Are you sure its SCSI? and not just a standard SATA Drive?

P.S. Thanks for the reminder, my second RTM of an Optiarc AD-7243S, this tiime it's for a refund and I'll be getting a Pioneer

Found this but its 5mm smaller in height 1.3cm where the Sony is 1.7cm

dabs.com - Pioneer 8x Slimline SATA DVD-RW Slot (DVR-TS08)

The info is from BeLarc Advisor so how reliable is that? I'd have thought quite satisfactory unless you have reason to believe otherwise.
It does say that the HDD is a ST350062 OAS SCSI Disk Device (500.11GB) as well.
Actually looking at that printout it looks from the BIOS that it was purchased after the 18 of March 2009 ... well it was still in warranty until I opened it ... oh ***** what have I done?

I've found Belarc to be accurate but you can also try a few other tools to see if they find more.

SIW

PC Wizard can be found at CPUID

Belarc Advisor

Everest Download from Major Geeks

AIDA32 Download from Major Geeks

Opening up and replacing a failed component on a desktop like a cd drive would likely not void a gaurantee.

If it is under warranty most of the time you have 1 year. You should contact them.

Well, I should imagine that if you have the PC apart that running software on it would be harder than looking at the label on the Drive

or by looking at the connectors on the drive or cable

bottom of the picture is a sata drive, top of the picture are sata cables

There's no way that is a SCSI drive.

It a SATA interface.

The documentation for the drive is here

Most SATA laptop opticals are the same excepting the attachment for the drawer cover - yours may be slightly different as it looks like a slot design from the piccies on Google. I'd be tempted to go for the same model if you value the laptop looking 'right'.

Try ebay eg this link

Dell SONY OPTIARC AD-7640S DVD±RW Dual Layer 1555 1735 on eBay (end time 28-Feb-10 10:32:39 GMT)

I have now downloaded and run each of the applications on this computer.
They all say the optical CDROM device is a SCSI device.
I can no longer look at the drive as the back has been refitted and covered it up again. I can say that the cable looked nothing like those in older machines. It diddn't have the usual ribbon cable either.

Other than that I I needed to learn these things before uncovering the thing. Never mind, it will be repaired now.
cheers and many thanks for the help. I think I am learning gradually
Cheers

Match has kindly corrected me here - the drive is a laptop drive I reckon, I assumed your machine was a laptop - of course it's not, its an all in one.

But....its still not a SCSI, and I don't know why they report as such

I quite agree and I do wish that I'd looked/photgraphed the evidence whilst I could.
I wonder if I could copy the relevant parts of BA to this site/forum to indicate what it says ... perhaps I'm reading it incorrectly?
The Mrs is trying to 'clean the machine' before its taken away tomorrow.
I'll need to squeeze in between her posting everything to her laptop to save it.
It's at times like this that I wish I knew more about them.
cheers

Feedback:
The computer came back from Dell today and despite all their warnings not all the proggies were deleted. BelarcAdvsor now advises that the optical drive is:-

PLOS DVD+-RW DL - 8ATS SCSI Cd Rom Device [CD ROM drive]

It still says SCSI in the above but I'm not worried. The strains of Don Williams lilting voice emanating from H's computer room is justification enough. If she's a happy bunny then so am I
Many thanks for all the help.
Jim
