I have just bought an HP D1460 printer mainly because I have several unused HP21 and 22 ink cartridges.
Now I find there is a cunning device which prevents me using these - probably because of their age.
The helpful message simply says 'there is a problem with the right hand ink cartridge' and of course fails to print. I can immediately replace the original cartridge and all is fine, but this is marked 'Introductory' so I suspect will not last long.
Can anyone please say how I can disable this? Thanks.

It's probably a defective cartridge. It could be the contacts especially if it's a refill or it could be that the ink has dried out if it's old.

Have you tried all your old cartridges?
Are they refills?

Thanks for your note RandyL. All these cartridges are original fills and they work fine on a
Deskjet 3940, but they fail to print when I tranfer them to the new printer. I have installed this new machine from disc both with and without all the 'extras' but it makes no difference. Could there be some date identifier in the program which recognises them as antedeluvian?

Well the D3940 does take the HP21 and HP22 cartridges which works. However I can't find the D1460 printer on the cartridge list on the HP website. But I can find the printer on the HP site. I notice that the other 1400 series like the D1455 use HP21 or HP21XL and the HP22 or HP22XL just like the D3940 so I assume the D1460 does too.

I thought perhaps you might have mixed up D1460 with D4160 but since the cartridges you got new says HP21 and 22 that's likely not the case.

Have you tried the new cartridges on the old D3940?

The spare cartridges I have are all HP21 (black) and I have tried the combinations that you suggest above which shows that they are all interchangeable from D1460 to D3940 but not vice-versa.
The first thing I did before buying the D1460 was to check that these 21s fitted, so I cannot imagine what cause of the problem is.
I do now notice however that the old ones are all date engraved 2008 (although I bought them in 2007) and the new working one 2009. That is the only difference that I can observe.

I'm at a loss here. They should work. The date shouldn't matter. If they were still sealed the ink shouldn't be dried up. I hope when you get a new replacement cartridge that it works. If not I would say the printer is deffective.

Some cartridges are just awkward they have funny little tabs of plastic on them and printers throw a fit when they dont slot in as they should - if you look at the cartridges from all angles there will ne some on the original and not yours and the printer wont recognise them - its just what the manufacturers do to try and make you buy from them -

Hi Frank, just as a last resort, try gently rubbing the contact surface on the old cartridges with a double type pencil/pen eraser, using the slightly abrasive bit for pen erasing. Just in case the contacts have become coated in a thin layer of oxide. Be careful not to put too much pressure on, as the insulated bit will be rubbed off.
