Lightbulb Google to Launch Operating System

Google has launched an assault on Microsoft's dominance of personal computers by announcing a new operating system.

A Google Chrome Operating System will be available on netbooks - laptops designed for web browsing - from the second half of 2010.
It will be virus-free and allow quick access to the internet, Google said.

That does put things in a different light. I wonder if Google can launch a full OS in time to be competitive with Windows7 when Microsoft launch it later this year?

I hope they succeed because competition is a good thing for customers, but I see a long uphill battle for Gooooooooogle.

Heck, I'm just now getting comfortable with Win 7 RC and have never used Vista. I'm an old dog and don't enjoy learning new tricks.

I will try and keep a watch on it and when this is to happen.

Wonder if it will be any good and cheaper than Vista/Windows 7?

From the Sky Tech News story:

"It[sic] likely to be free so it'll be attractive to all hardware manufacturers, so we should see a good range of netbooks running Chrome OS in the second half of 2010," he told Sky News Online."

Free would be a good start, and will likely cause people to overlook some quirks if and where they might exist.

I'm used to producing files using various computer applications and storing them in folders on the installed OS. Using online applications is OK but what happens when the connection goes down, or the Internet becomes so busy that data slows to a crawl? At least with a full-blown OS installed, there is always something else you can be getting on with. I'm not sure a netbook running Google's OS will ever take the place of a real computer for me.
