Smile ubuntu menu.lst

ok im a bit of a new when it comes to Linux the only ones ive used is the live cds and the one which you don't have to reboot your pc for
any way i have followed an online guide for installing it without rebooting..and im stumped i hve to edit the menu.lst file and i don't know what to do..i have installed the files for Linux in drive D:/ and then all the other files for GRUB 4.1.0 (except one which is in C:/)to C:/boot and i have changed in the menu.lst file all hd0 and hd0,0 to read hd1 or hd1,1 is this right?...by the looks of it its wrong. I have also added start GRUB to the boot menu but when i click on it it ask me to select and operating system to install...

i know this may be a dodgy explanation but im rushing :P
any help would be greatly appreciated
