Intel reveals the launch dates, models, speeds, and hints at pricing of its first range of Solid State Storage devices

Specifications for the disks are fairly impressive, with the mainstream disks boasting up to 250MB/sec sustained read and up to 70MB/sec sustained write. The X25-X is even faster, with sustained reads of up to 250MB/sec and sustained writes of an incredible 170MB/sec. Previous SSDs have usually fallen down on sustained write speed when compared to conventional hard disks, but no current hard disk can claim 170MB/sec sustained write speeds.

Part of the reason for the high speeds is the Intel-designed and proprietary NAND flash controller that took ‘tens of man years to design’, teamed with the compute-quality ONFI 1.0 NAND memory chips.
